If you’ve been training for a while, you’ve probably hit it: the dreaded plateau. You’re still showing up, doing your workouts, eating pretty well — but your strength isn’t increasing, your body isn’t changing, and your motivation starts to dip.
First of all: this is normal. Every athlete, from beginner to pro, hits plateaus. The key is knowing how to break through and keep your progress moving forward. At Lion, we coach our members through plateaus all the time — and here’s exactly how you can do it too:
1️⃣ Change Up Your Workout Routine
Your body is smart. If you keep doing the same workouts, the same exercises, and the same weights, your muscles adapt — and stop growing.
✅ Switch your reps and sets: If you’ve been doing 3 sets of 10, try 4 sets of 6-8 reps with heavier weight.
✅ Try new exercises: Swap out familiar moves for variations that challenge your muscles in a new way.
✅ Change your tempo: Slow down the eccentric (lowering) part of the movement to increase time under tension.
At Lion, we call this: “Keep the body guessing.”
2️⃣ Dial In Your Nutrition
Plateaus often have more to do with food than workouts. If you’re not eating enough protein, not fueling your workouts, or not adjusting your intake as your body changes, progress stalls.
✅ Track your intake for a week. Many people eat less (or more) than they realize.
✅ Increase protein. Aim for around 0.7–1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight.
✅ Adjust calories. If you’re trying to lose fat, you may need a slight calorie deficit; for muscle gain, a small surplus.
Not sure how? The Lion team can help you create a plan that works for your goals.
3️⃣ Prioritize Recovery
Sometimes your body isn’t stuck — it’s just tired. Overtraining can lead to stalled progress, fatigue, and burnout.
✅ Make sure you’re sleeping 7-9 hours per night.
✅ Add active recovery days (walks, mobility work, stretching).
✅ Don’t be afraid to take a full rest day when needed — recovery allows muscles to grow.
4️⃣ Stay Consistent — Even When Progress Slows
Plateaus are when many people give up. But the truth is, staying consistent through a plateau is often what leads to your next breakthrough.
✅ Keep showing up.
✅ Trust the process.
✅ Focus on small wins — better form, more reps, slightly more weight.
5️⃣ Get Coaching & Accountability
Sometimes you need fresh eyes. A trainer can spot form issues, adjust your programming, and push you out of your comfort zone safely.
✅ New program adjustments
✅ Technique checks
✅ Accountability to stay motivated
At Lion, this is exactly what we do every day — helping members break through plateaus and keep growing.
The Bottom Line
Plateaus aren’t failure — they’re feedback. They’re a sign your body has adapted to your current routine, and it’s time to make some smart changes. With the right adjustments, you can break through and keep making progress toward your goals.
